Yonaguni and its Horses

Words: W. David Marx/Photography: Tatsuya Tabii

Yonaguni is famous for its horses. The North Ranch is home to around 70 true Yonaguni ponies, a special small breed of horse indigenous to the island. They once powered carts that carried supplies but are increasingly rare. On the south side of the island, there is a free roaming zone for a much larger group of crossbred horses. They are not particularly scared of humans nor cars, which means they easily cause traffic jams when they decide to take a nap in the middle of the main road. Advanced horse riders can hire a horse to ride on the beach or through the water.
